Repair & Restoration

Repair, reconditioning and restoration work for pianos that need more than tuning alone.

Because this work is often shaped by the condition of the instrument, the availability of suitable parts, and the time required to do it properly, repair and restoration usually begin with assessment rather than immediate quotation.

Following inspection, I advise on the work recommended and an estimated cost range where possible. More involved work is then scheduled according to workshop availability and the needs of the piano.

1

Assessment

Repair and restoration work begins with inspection. I assess the condition of the piano, identify faults where possible, and advise on the likely scope of work.

2

Recommendation

After the  inspection, I explain what is needed, why it is needed and what can be done. I then will provide an estimated cost range where possible.

3

Scheduling

Approved work is then booked according to current workshop availability, parts supply and the complexity of the job. More involved work may take place over a long period.

Piano action repair, Sutton Pianos - Piano Tuning and Repairs

Action Repair

Faults within the action can affect touch, repetition, control and reliability. I carry out careful repair and adjustment work to help restore proper response and function.

Where parts are badly worn or beyond repair, replacement may be needed. Wherever possible, I aim to diagnose the issue clearly and carry out the most appropriate repair.

String Replacement

Broken or damaged strings can affect both tuning stability and the overall musical balance of a piano.

I measure, match and source suitable replacement strings, fitting them with care so the repair sits as naturally as possible within the instrument. Costs can vary depending on the type of string required and whether specialist sourcing or import charges are involved.

Reconditioning & Restoration

Some pianos need more than isolated repairs and benefit from more substantial reconditioning or restoration work.

Depending on the instrument and its condition, this may involve replacing worn parts, improving mechanical performance, or planning deeper work over time. My approach is guided by the quality, condition and character of the piano, with the aim of improving function, sound and long-term reliability while respecting the instrument itself.

Estimates, Parts & Timescales

Repair and restoration work can vary greatly in scope, and estimates are often only reliable after the piano has been examined properly.

In many cases, I can provide an estimated cost range following inspection. For more involved work, final cost will depend on labour, the condition of the instrument, and the sourcing of suitable parts. Specialist or imported parts are charged separately where required.

Lead times for repair and restoration are usually longer than for tuning appointments, particularly where workshop time or parts supply are involved.
