The Person Behind Sutton Pianos
I’m James Sutton, a piano tuner and technician working across Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, offering tuning, repair and restoration with care, precision and attention to detail.
My approach is careful and unhurried. I take time to understand each instrument properly and aim to do work that is thoughtful, honest and of a consistently high standard. Whether I am tuning a regularly maintained piano or assessing one that needs more involved work, the aim is always the same: to help the instrument sound, feel and function at its best.
How It All Started
Before training as a piano tuner and technician, I spent many years working as a professional musician. That musical background shaped my ear and remains an important part of how I approach piano work today.
I was first encouraged into the profession by Nick Weeks of Alton Piano Services, who had been our family piano tuner for many years and became an important mentor as I began my training. I went on to study with Piano Tuner Academy and have continued developing my skills through masterclasses, events and further specialist training, including work with The Piano Technology School and Chapman Pianos.
I have also had the privilege of continuing work previously carried out by established tuners, including Shirley Trinkwon. That continuity is something I value greatly, and I am always mindful of the trust placed in me when caring for instruments that have often been looked after over many years.
Much of my work continues to come through recommendation and word of mouth. I now work with private owners, musicians and institutions across Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, helping pianos receive the care and attention they need over the long term.
